Subject: Expiration dates

I was in the grocery store today and I started looking for expiration dates on canned fruit, vegetables, etc. There are none! The only item that had a date on it was Campbell's soup. Does anyone have any idea how long canned items will be good? I'd really like to start buying some food to put away, but I don't want to start too early. Any help would be appreciated.
