Subject: Any Good Recipes or Cookbooks?
I visited the library this weekend and found several good resources in the cookbook section including a book on using whole grains and a backpacking cookbook with recipes using dried foods such as powdered eggs.
The backpacking cookbook is called Supermarket Backpacker by Harriet Barker. There were several recipes for pancakes using powdered eggs. Here is a sample, Wheat Pancakes:
Combine: 1 heaping T. egg powder 1/3 c. dry buttermilk powder 3/4 c. whole wheat flour 1 T. brown sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. soda 1/2 tsp. salt Add: 1 c. water 2 T. melted margarine (try butter powder --me) Bake in a greased frying pan. Makes 8-10 cakes.
It would be nice to have some good ideas about how to use some of the food storage items we are collecting, especially tips to add some variety.

Hi For years I've been collecting survival cookbooks. Most everyone will know about these, but itcan't hurt to post the resources again.
First, Carla Emery's cookbook. It covers everything you could possibly want to know about subsistence living and is the most useful book around. You can buy it through Backwoods Home magazine, which has a website under Backwoods Home.
Second, also through backwoods home if you don't have a Deseret books near you - Making the best of Basics, a family preparedness handbook by james Talmage Stevens. Lots and lots of recipes and down to earth.
Countryside magazine - always has good recipes and loads of good information on all kinds of basic living.
The Mormon church has a few cook books too. i think you can find them through Deseret books. if there isn't one near you, you can call their 800 number and ask for a catalog.
You're on the right track, the basic thingto remember about food storage isthat you need to use what you store. The first month i started using my storage I found out quickly that I did not have enough wheat and oil and then i started canning, using only the storage and found out I was in deep trouble withthe small amount of salt I'd put by. use what you have and then find out what more you really need.
Good luck!

Subject: Another cookbook with wheat ideas
I found a great resource written by Rita Bingham's mom, Esther Dickey. Rita has written cookbooks for food storage which are sold by Walton's. She must have gotten her inspiration from her Mom, who wrote this book in the 60's. The book is called Passport to Survival and has many good ideas for what to do with wheat, offering more variety than I thought possible. The book may be out of print, but I found it at the library and plan to do a search for it through the used book store.
