Subject: harvesting waterfowl
looking for information on food potential of wild waterfowl. thinking of feeding them at our shore of a large lake to increase supply. are there inedible breeds or are there seasons that they should not be harvested? we have plenty of coots, mallards and canadas but few wood ducks, herons, trumpeters and mixed egrets. we now keep some water open in winter and this encourages winter stays. don't want to put us or the birds thru this if there is little or no gain.

As far as I know and I have tried most, all birds are edible, Fowl, and even those cute little songbirds. Robins eat good, but you have to have alot. You can also eat their eggs. I would encourage you to encourage habitat for nesting also to ensure your resupply. Management is always important to ensure a continueing return of the migrating birds. You can get all kinds of info from your extension service or your game and fish. Don't tell them anything except that wish to help the pretty little birds survive the winter and encourage the species survival. Talk green and they might even give you money to get ready for y2k. Just be careful with what you say.
