Again I hate to be the pessimist of the forum, but I am operating under the very worst possible scenario mindset.

What if the world goes KAPUT for several years and I have to do everything myself, just like the pioneers? I know that I can acquire some modern technology that they wouldn't have had access to, like a vacuum pump made from an old auto air conditioning compressor (e-mail me for plans) to vacuum pack stuff in jars.

The dry ice you mention may not be available for extended periods, likewise the oxygen absorbent material. So is my little vacuum device the best way to accomlish the goal?

For the groups information. One can build a vacuum compressor using cast off parts and simple supplies in less than a couple of hours.

My goal is to learn how to survive without the modern world whenever possible. That way if things don't get so bad, then what have I lost? If it does, then I'll probably be a very popular man in my church.

Feedback anyone?

Stanly

Subject: Available Vacuum Sealers?

I'm looking for a source for a vacuum sealer. I really don't want to pay more than around $100, but it needs to seal bottles of various types and also make plastic sealed bags. I'd like the specs if anyone knows them(how strong is the vacuum, prices, etc?)

Subject: $10 to $150 Vacuum pump

I saw a great non-electric vacuum packing machine at a recent preparedness expo. It was made from an old auto compressor mounted on wood with a hand crank, and used to evacuate air from gallon jars (or other sizes) The fellow at the booth sold a set of plans and instructions for $10, a complete kit (less the compressor which would come from an auto junkyard) for $59, or a fully constructed vacuum pump for $150. I bought the plans, but since its been several months and I still haven't built it, I ordered one built by him recently!

The address I have for him is Pastor Tom Halverson, c/o Hartzel Halverson, Rt1 Box 273, Guthrie, MN 56461 phone (218) 751-1522.

It was an ingenious system and good instructions. Even if you aren't ready for it right now it would be worth ordering the plans in case he can't be found when you're ready to get or build one.
