Perhaps you are like me, I don't even want to think about preparing for a disaster. Do you ever worry about the future? I do, sometimes. Do you wonder what it could be like if for some reason you weren't able to run to the store for groceries for supper? Actually this could be called by several different names. One of the best I've found is "provident living."

"...'Provident Living' implies the husbanding of our resources, the wise planning of financial matters, full provision for personal health, and adequate preparation for education and career development, giving appropriate attention to hone production and storage as well as the development of emotional resiliency." Spencer W. Kimball

Where Do I Begin?

Beginning Your Home Storage

Preparing for either a short term or long term family emergency can be overwhelming. Where does a person start? A cliché works here: Start with the end in mind. What do you want your food storage to look Like?

In fact, It doesn't have to look one way. Everyone's storage and planning may be different. The following factors will influence your planning: Individual preference, age, sex, health needs, finances, available storage, living conditions. job, etc.

Are you starting from scratch? Maybe you would Like to have a 2 week supply of food and supplies on hand. Or a 3-6 month supply. Do you have buckets of wheat and oats that are years old and don't know what to do with them? Maybe you could start incorporating some of those basic supplies into your current diet.

Hint: Don't go into debt to buy food storage.
An easy way to get started with your food storage is to buy extra non-perishable items of what your family now enjoys and uses. You can either just buy an extra item of what you're buying that week or buy in bulk when items you use go on sale.

Are you realty anxious to get going on your storage planning? There are several excellent books on the market. There's an excellent little handbook published by the LDS Church called "Essentials of Home Production and Storage." You can order it directly from the Distribution Center by calling 1-800-537-5971. It is item number 32288. It costs only $0.75.

Emergency Hint: Keep your car at least 1/2 full of gas at all times. It means more trips to the gas station but your usage and cost should be the same.
