Dr. Gary North Interviews Steve Portela
11 March 97

Dr. Gary North became a household name between 1997-2000 because of his stand on the Y2K computer bug issue. As most people know he blew the whistle long and loud concerning the seriousness of Y2K and made thousands of friends and enemys in the process. As it turned out, the year 2000 came into existance almost without a hitch, as far as the world's computers were concerned. It's true Dr. North's predictions didn't come to pass, thank goodness. We feel that if Dr. North and a few others like him hadn't created an awareness on this issue, there's a good chance their worst predictions would have come to pass. As it was, business and government got motivated months before they otherwise would have. Fifty billion dollars was spent to fix the problem. As the repair process continued, government and business became confident they had done all they could to fix critical systems. But no one was sure it had really been fixed, right up until the new year was brought in. Neary every large business and government had their 'what if' contingency plans as Y2K remained an unknown right up until the roll-over into the 21st Century.
In March of 1997, before the public mind really became aware of Y2K, Dr. North made an interview with our boss, Mr. Portela. Many timeless self reliance principles were introduced during the interview. Now that we are into the 21st century we feel these ideas still deserve study.
